Myth #1: Students and teachers can find everything they need online

8 Myths About Digital Learning


In January 2012, I wrote a post called iPad 3C's: Some Planning Questions.  It holds up nine months later.  For some schools, however, my warnings came too late.  Burlington (MA) High School, for example, began a 1:1 iPad program in the fall, funding it within budget largely by closing computer labs and not purchasing textbooks or a new language lab.  According to the article, Principal Patrick Larkin commented that "they didn’t throw away the old books, but no longer need to buy new ones, since students and teachers can find everything they need online."

This is a commonly believed myth, especially among educators who have themselves been participating only viscerally in the evolution of digital tools.

It is true that eBooks and eTexts can be found online - or created in-house and put online. But these need to be fully vetted by subject specialists. One would not, for example, teach an eBook explication of an expurgated classic or a text that asked few if any higher level questions.  On the other hand, most literature written before 1950 or so is in the public domain and it can be read as-is digitally.  And perhaps Burlington HS is taking advantage of the growing number of freely open university courses, which at least have quality control based upon the institution.  But is there a university or college course freely open and appropriate for the 9th grader reading at the 5th grade level? 

The internet is, of course, a vast information storage center, but it is very hard to search efficiently and effectively. Most students and teachers just touch the surface of what they could find if they did an expert search. I don't suggest that students be subjected to long-winded search strategy lessons - boring! Check out the infographic Get More Out of Google to see what I mean - and that infographic is solely focused on one search tool and one database.  But students do need to learn the basic literacy of using the Internet as a source.  Nope - it is not inherent to question the validity or bias of a source. 

Articles such as 12 Ways to Be More Search Savvy and The Times' Just Google It promulgate the myth by simplifying the problem; they are still viewing internet research as a linear search, the goal of a search being to find an answer.  That is the old way of thinking about learning.  While educators are stuck at this level, students certainly can find everything they need online. Learning becomes equated with the collection of content, whether it be information (70% or more) or literature (30% or less). 

But some teachers are - or at least should be - asking more convoluted, complex questions. These questions require problem-solving.  The problem is that when students are required to learn - to understand - something about content, when questions become creative, individualized and complex (higher level Bloom's questions), students can not find what they need on the Internet.  Moreover, as will discussed in Myths #2 and #3, searching for answers on the Internet becomes itself an anti-learning task.  Everything is anything.

The acceptance of anything as something is a large step toward educational mediocrity.

What's more, where it is believed that teachers can find everything they need online, the future of education becomes truly dismaying.  A teacher approaching a new topic in a 1:1 environment should be reforming learning goals, and thus redrawing what is still called "the lesson plan."  Too often I find requests for canned lessons in online educator discussions.  Too often these requests are answered with digital versions of the worksheet.  For example, I did a quick look for a short story that I had taught successfully and which two years ago was available only in anthologies, Bradbury's "The Sound of Summer Running."  I found online not only the story (in .pdf file - perfect for use in an iPad classroom - and probably in violation of Bradbury's copyright), but also several sets of comprehension questions that I didn't know I needed.  Immediately, I needed them.  But here is the thing: the questions were all level 1 comprehension and a few were just plain poor. I did not find a single deep reading question. I did not find a single textual or stylistic question.  What does the internet offer to a teacher of this story or to a student reading the story?  Nothing they need in order to question or create (except the story itself).

The essence of good teaching is deep thought about the core content on the part of the teacher, not time-filling, interactive, digital activities. 

Teachers can not find everything they need online. They need deep education, experience, and insight into the learning needs, interests, and styles of their students. They need time to access a multiplicity of print, media and experiential resources to extend their own learning - and to incorporate these resources into classroom activities for their students. To expect less of a teacher is to encourage mediocrity in the classroom.

The iPad is NOT all about collecting information. Deep learning requires collaboration (and its subset communication), reflection, and creation.  These can not be found - they must be made

Perhaps Principal Larkin is not just trying to be trendy and save money; perhaps he has well-deserved confidence in the intellectual abilities and academic backgrounds of his teachers and students.  I hope this is true. Most of all, I hope he does not believe also in Myths #2 - #8.

Myth #2: Digital learning is non-linear
Myth #3: The digital classroom is a playground
Myth #4: Digital learning is interactive
Myth #5: Digital learning is collaborative
Myth #6: Digital learning is creative
Myth #7: Digital learning develops problem-solving
Myth #8: The role of the teacher in a digital classroom is new and different

Each of these statements is a talking point or selling point for the expansion of digital tools in the classroom, especially 1:1 tools.  Each is also a facile generalization about digital learning - a modern myth based upon shallowly considered jargon.

Laptops, iPads and other devices are being purchased by districts having no idea what to do with them beyond the promises of these myths.  It's time for educators to take a deeper look at this jargon.  How, exactly, does each intersect with learning?

My points do not, of course, invalidate the concept of digital learning, a concept to which I have devoted the last 20 years of my career in education.  My purpose is simply to remind educators to proceed with purpose.  By questioning the validity of each of these statements as part of the on-going self-assessment of teaching strategies, teachers can improve their use of 1:1 digital tools. School leadership can (and should) extend and improve critical professional development around these ideas.

Myths are often founded in truth, and each of these statements is true of the best online learning experiences. Teachers should strive to create and find those "best of" experiences.

This leads directly to the discussion of Myth #1.  For the sake of simplicity, my discussion will focus on the iPad and internet tools, but the points apply to all tools that create a 1:1 learning environment matching one student with one digital tool.

Identifying the Successful Online Student

A year ago, I completed (for a graduate program) an intensive review of the literature related to the characteristics of the successful online student, 3-12.  As a result of my research, I created questionnaire instruments that can be used to identify those students who should be successful in an online course and those who will probably not be successful, grades 3-8 and 9-12. 

I withdrew from the certification program (Arizona State University), so my instrument has never been tested.  I offer it to any school or district wanting to pilot it, with a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 United States License.

In short, I found that a student is likely to be successful online in either an independent or a blended setting if (in order of importance):
  • the student has a strong locus of control: internal v. external - in layman's terms, it means that the student is self-motivated and can speak up, but also that he/she will show up at the course and meet requirements (less important in a tightly blended environment) with little or no adult prompting
  • the student has strong and independent time-management skills - somewhat less important in the blended or home-school environment, but still the most important skill identified by online students themselves
  • [this is often overlooked] the student perceives that he/she has the support of parent and/or teacher in academic and other life challenges - I believe that this the most important predictor, but that is not fully supported by the data
  • the student perceives that online interaction with a teacher is important - this is a biggie - online students have to be able interact with online teachers (OK, not true in poorly constructed courses and programs)
  • the student perceives that online interaction with other students is important - but this does not mean that he/she has ever done it.  In fact, true collaboration is not that common in online classes
  • the student already uses the Internet at least once a day for school-related work - what this is getting at is some facility with using applications - most online courses are tightly self-contained, but a basic icon-literacy is still necessary
  • the student perceives that the online class/learning experience is valuable - this perception is itself a motivator
  • the student perceives that he/she has the ability to meet the online class time commitment - notice that is NOT the same as goal-setting - the best courses set the goals for the student and allow for progress through failure (similar often to gaming), and for the most part goal-setting is more important for success in the traditional classroom than in the online classroom
  • the student perceives that he/she has the ability to think analytically and solve problems strategically
  • the student has a strong sense of self-efficacy with regard to using technology for collaboration and communication - it means that he/she is confident with regard to the "tech side" of online learning (this does NOT mean that he/she has experience, although in today's world smartphones probably contribute significantly to this efficacy after age 10)
  • the student is aware of his/her learning style (tactile/kinesthetic, visual, auditory/verbal) - the learning style itself does not matter, but a student who knows how he/she best learns makes the best use of online education tools and options 
  • the student's performance on standardized testing (NECAP, NWEA, PSAT, etc.) and GPA (high school only) - there is a correlation between testing performance and success in an online program (not a surprise), but low scores are generally mitigated by positive correlations in the other factors
There are also small correlations between the economic status of the family and with having a computer available at home to online success, but these were not fully supported by data at the time of my research. 

Because the instrument was never tested, benchmarks were not set by me.  So - community help is needed.

What's missing:

When I began the research, I had anticipated that the factors would reflect the same set of skills identified by Heather Wolpert-Gawron and tightly overlap, as she points out, with the list of 21st Century Skills (Collaboration, Independent Learning, Communication, Problem Solving, Decision Making, Understanding Bias, Leadership, Questioning, Persuasion, Goal Setting, Sharing the Air, Compromise, Summarizing).  This is, after all, the premise of the rise of online as a viable, even preferred, 21st Century classroom.

But in fact, mastery or even past performance of these skills does not seem to be nearly as important as perceived ability and support in learning. Moreover, the following are not indicators of success:
  • writing skills - the best 3-12 programs will guide students in developing these skills - again, the can-do attitude is important, however; so
  • goal-setting (see note above)
  • collaboration skills - again, programs worth paying for develop these skills - students only need to perceive that the skills are valuable in order to be successful
In sum: 

Online success is not as simple as being a digital native.  Is not a given for any student cohort.  It is clearly very much predicated on believing that one can be a success in a digital classroom.  In sum, it is a choice made available by technology - a great choice for many students, but a poor choice for other students.  At this point in time, that is how it should be perceived.

The great advantage to online learning is that it provides a classroom that crosses or ignores the geographical and economic boundaries that so often bar potentially successful students from classroom success. 

One way to use this questionnaire is to give it "blind" to all students in a grade or program:
  • It would be interesting to compare teacher/guidance preconceptions about student success with actual student scores. 
  • It would be interesting to see what questions point to areas of the educational program that might be made more "online ready."  If, for example, a significant percentage of students do perceive time-management or problem-solving as strengths, the school has some work to do.

Creating Process


This is my 1st picture with the new MacBook camera - not bad! It's going to be a useful tool in the classroom!

Committed to group building and eventual student leadership of literary discussions, I have been working the kids hard. To my surprise, they seem to enjoy the challenges of pre-collaboration. We have read and tried to agree on solutions to some pretty tough "Puzzles." Today we began "silent conversations," which were more difficult. In a silent conversation, each student in a group (of 3 -4) writes a response to a tough question or quotation, then the paper is passed around the group until all have read and responded to others in the group. Our context came from a Time Magazine review of Catching Fire, a sequel to the very hot YA novel The Hunger Games. The question raised by the quotation comes down to this: Do kids (e.g. YOU) really know what real violence is? If you don't, are adults right in protecting you from it? If you do, is it good or helpful to know about violence in the world? Why or How?

There was a silent and active response - strong opinions that were quietly expressed. It is a beginning. We are building the skills for significant oral and/or written response - a linchpin for collaboration.

We moved into literature land with the study of fairy tales - violent stories really, but until recently heavily cleansed. As we move from old tellings to modern [print & media] retellings to modern novels with fairy tale roots, the violence and the evil magnify. One of our Essential Questions for the year is, What is meant by the phrase "vague dread"? Why do we like to experience "vague dread" in stories and other media?

It is, I think, good stuff for dialogue.

Today I told the story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff. It was disappointing that no voice joined mine. Only one in three students knew the story, which is a great introduction to the "basic 3" - character, setting, plot. I handed out picture books of fairy tales, retold and related tales. HW is to identify characters, setting and plot. The lists have already begun to turn into two fairy-tale pictionary boards that will help us to identify the core set of story characters and settings for the readings of the first half year (and beyond). We will also use this to build our inference skills. As for the summaries, I want a Twitter plot summary of no more than 140 characters (good training for focused thinking). Eventually, students will post these summaries to Edmodo and back-match them will the books.

These classes bring to mind again the questions surrounding student readiness for and the projected effectiveness of digital texts and digital classrooms. How would my students have responded if I had recorded the Billy Goats instead of telling the story?

Take a look at this recorded storytelling posted to YouTube. Is it as captivating as live story-telling? Not to 12 year-olds. It is true that I am creating a digital textbook this year, but that web notebook can not replace the interactions that happen in class. I have learned, for example, who can draw, who attends to detail, who can categorize and who can not, who can follow oral instruction and who can not, who is visualizing and who is not. I have good feed-back on the buy-in to my teaching. I would miss these interpersonal discoveries in a fully digital classroom. And the students would miss the individual encouragement, tweaking, re-direction and support they get from me during class.

On the other hand, I am itching to get done with process and to begin with content. As soon as my students can do basic tasks on their new laptops, and as soon as their Web 2.0 Contracts have been submitted (most of my students are under 13), we will go partly digital. With this in mind, I have begun to use partner check-ins during laptop instruction and to ask the seating group to answer individual questions (and know what questions have been asked) before I will step in.

We have developed guidelines for group work; the same guidelines will apply to digital discussions and collaboration. This is what we have come up with:

  • Ask good questions
  • Listen to other members of the group [read everyone's comments]
  • Everyone must participate - everyone has to be heard
  • Don't put down the ideas of others - build them up!
  • Don't all talk at once - take turns
  • Brainstorm as a group
  • Share your ideas - don't hold back
  • Help each other to understand
  • Be prepared
  • Don't interrupt
This list will function as well in a digitally collaborative environment as it will in classroom Inquiry Groups. If the classroom fails, the digital environment will fail - and it is not about my "powerful presence" in either environment. Structuring learning to cement processes has to happen first - period.
